Listen: Your Pilot is Listening

Listen mode is one of those projects that seemed so futuristic we didn’t think we’d be able to release it with the first version of Pilot, but much like Alexander Graham Bell accidentally discovering that the telephone receiver could send and receive voice messages, we discovered that Pilot could interpret speech within a close proximity.

To our amazement, we realized that if a user was within a close distance, a maximum of 3 to 5 feet depending on the environment and the volume of the speaker, Pilot can capture their speech and interpret it directly in your ear. There’s no need to share a secondary Pilot or other setup.

“First, I want to say that I am completely in love with this product. You have made an amazing piece of technology, and improved both my personal and professional lives. I use your product mainly for the LISTEN mode at work. As a firefighter in a community of over 160,000 it has been a great tool to communicate with non English speakers in a crisis.” -Rylie

There is still a lot of work our team needs to complete before it’s a fluid and perfect solution, but this is truly the first step in developing a translating earpiece which will eventually translate everything around you.

In the meantime, we’ve made some software improvement to increase the accuracy of the translations. We also added a toggle arrow at the bottom of the screen which will easily let you switch between the two selected languages; this will help if you want to quickly reply and show the translation screen to your partner so they can see the translation from your smartphone.
